Equality & Diversity

Equality

My understanding of 'Equality' is that of recognising (and responding with fairness) that all the children and their families that I work with have their own identities and individual needs, by taking into consideration and being respectful of their faiths, beliefs, ideas and values, treating them all fairly and providing everyone with opportunities to reach their full potential.

I am committed to working together with families to provide an all inclusive setting whereby I actively promote and teach the message of fairness, equality & diversity by exposing children to a wide range of teaching, experiences, activities and resources and learning opportunities to further develop their understanding and encourage respect and tolerances of others own beliefs, ideas and ways of life.

Diversity

My understanding of 'Diversity' is that which describes the differences in age, culture, disabilities, ethnicity, gender, religion and sexual orientation and that we live in a very diverse world today with our local communities made up of many differences. I appreciate that from a very early age children have formulated attitudes towards other children and families that are different from their own and it is part of my job as an early years educator to role model positive attitudes of acceptance towards such differences.

Equal Opportunities

I give all children in my care the opportunity to reach their full potential. Sometimes this means adapting an activity to the child's ability and stage of development, providing additional resources or giving one child more attention and support than others during a particular activity or routine.

All children in my care are given the opportunity to play with all the toys (subject to health and safety with children under 3 years of age). No toys are just for girls or just for boys. I try to ensure my toys reflect positive images of children and people from different cultures and with different abilities. I have toys and resources that challenge stereotypical ideas on what careers are open to men and women.

No child in my care will be discriminated against in anyway, whether for their skin colour, culture, gender, ability or religion. I will challenge any remarks that I feel are inappropriate.

I encourage the children in my care to learn more about their own culture and to find out about the culture and religions of other children. We do this in a fun way through sharing books, colouring sheets, cooking and eating food from around the world and celebrating special festivals. I will provide resources to support this where neccessary.

I encourage the children to develop a healthy respect of each others differences and to value everyone as an individual.

I encourage Parents to share with us any festivals, special occasions or artefacts, which may enhance the children's learning and understanding.
